Special Issue Introduction

Many movement disorders are neurodegenerative, such as Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease, which are the most common ones. Some other movement disorders are not obviously neurodegenerative, and the neurodegeneration is likely more subtle; a probable example is essential tremor. Many of both types occur in mid to late life. Although genetic factors are quite important and environmental factors are also critical, the role of ageing is often considered, and the evidence for this has been increasing. In particular, the mechanism of ageing effects is better understood, including, for example, the shortening of telomeres. The purpose of this collection is to consider these issues in movement disorders, looking for commonalities and potential therapeutic approaches. Both original research and reviews are welcome.
